Neku begins the Reapers' Game by forming a pact with Joshua Kiryu, a mysterious boy. Neku discovers he can scan Joshua, revealing glimpses of lost memories. They encounter the new Game Master, Sho Minamimoto, who incites conflict among players. The next day, Neku grows suspicious of Joshua due to returning memories. Together, they confront Taboo Noise, a powerful enemy emerging from Minamimoto's art pieces. Neku observes Eri buying flowers for Shiki before scanning Joshua again. This scan shows a vision of Joshua's death in Udagawa. Before Neku can question Joshua, Beat appears before them in Reaper form.
