Ep. 1: Kyon and Mikuru travel back to Tanabata three years prior to assist Haruhi
On July 7, Kyon and Mikuru journey to the Tanabata of three years ago. Future Mikuru puts her younger self to sleep and instructs Kyon to help a specific individual. While carrying the sleeping Mikuru, Kyon encounters a young Haruhi sneaking into East Junior High and aids her using the alias John Smith. He assists her in drawing strange symbols on the school athletics grounds. Haruhi questions the existence of strange beings, prompting Kyon to suggest they might exist because he knows someone like her at his school. After Haruhi departs, Kyon wakes Mikuru and discovers her time traveling device, the TPDD, is missing. They visit Yuki, who helps them return to their proper time. Kyon reflects on whether he inspired Haruhi to attend North High and search for strange beings.
