Oriana escapes Touma, Stiyl, and Tsuchimikado at a bus station by employing the counter magic Shorthand to block tracking. To locate the spell, Stiyl and Tsuchimikado endure a painful ritual, discovering it is hidden within a middle school ball toss competition. Fearing competitors will be injured if they touch the spell, Touma and Tsuchimikado enter the match as players, only to face Mikoto’s school. Touma attempts to shield Mikoto from a basket pole he suspects contains the magic, but Seiri accidentally touches the actual Shorthand. She is struck by the spell and falls unconscious before Touma destroys it. Seiri is hospitalized, prompting Touma to vow revenge against Oriana for her actions.
