Aliens from Oni invade Earth, challenging Ataru Moroboshi to a game of tag against princess Lum to save the planet. Upon winning, Lum misinterprets the event as a marriage proposal, irritating Ataru's girlfriend Shinobu Miyake. In the subsequent days, Lum actively interferes with Ataru and Shinobu's attempts to communicate, causing widespread chaos and destruction throughout the city as she tries to prevent their interaction.
