Two years after Fersen departs, the Queen bears Marie Therese and Joseph, relocating to Petit Trianon to raise them. She abandons all official audiences, frustrating nobles while peasant unrest intensifies. Oscar ignores this neglect, noting the Queen’s rare happiness. Empress Maria Theresa dies in concern. Meanwhile, jeweler Boehmer, holding a 1,600,000 livre diamond necklace unsold for four years, enlists Jeanne. She deceives Rohan into believing the Queen desires the piece as guarantor. Jeanne instead sells the diamonds in England via Nicholas. As the Revolutionary War concludes and soldiers return, Oscar visits Trianon to urge a return to duty but fails to disrupt the Queen’s joy. Later, Oscar and Andre encounter Robespierre and Bernard at a pub, where they are beaten for their noble status. Boehmer sends a payment letter, which the unaware Queen burns, igniting the Affair of the Diamond Necklace.
