A portal appears in Mikado City, allowing powerful alien beings known as "Neighbors" to enter, as they are unaffected by Earth's weapons. The only defense is a secret group called the "Border," who wield special weapons known as "Triggers." After four years, the city has adjusted to the recurring alien threats. A new student, Yuma Kuga, and his classmate Osamu Mikumo encounter a Neighbor during an attack. Osamu, a Border member, attempts to fight it with his Trigger but fails. Yuma then uses his own Trigger to defeat the alien. He later discloses that he is not a member of Border and is, in fact, a Neighbor who has moved from the other side.
