Two artificial intelligence systems, Quark and Lepton, manage most aspects of life in Japan. After their creator, Kiyomi Tanabe, died without disclosing their design, neither has allowed human oversight. In 2018, Naoki, Kiyomi’s son, is a high school student living a normal life when he reconnects with his childhood friend Aya. She warns him that authorities are trying to take him into custody, causing his life to change dramatically.
