Taira Capeta is a fourth-grade boy who lost his mother at a young age and often hides his loneliness by acting tough around his father. One day, his father brings home discarded parts from work and builds a go-kart. They take it to a track, but the kart is damaged and difficult to control. Capeta, however, manages to handle it skillfully and even manages to catch up to and nearly overtake another fast kart. The driver of that kart is Minamoto Naomoi, a junior racing champion from East Japan. Watching the encounter, Naomoi's mother, Minamoto Nanako, suggests that Capeta should consider joining an official race.
