Mizuki Shigeru no Tono Monogatari

A renowned yokai comics artist adapts a significant piece of Japanese supernatural literature into a graphic novel. The work is considered a key text in Japanese folklore, comparable to the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. Originally written in 1910 by folklorists Kunio Yanagita and Kizen Sasaki, it preserves legends from the Tono region as traditional culture faded during Japan's modernization. Created in the later years of the artist's career, the graphic novel blends the original stories with personal reflections. The artist attempts to follow the path of the original researchers but finds physical limitations. As he travels through Tono, he recounts famous legends, bringing to life various supernatural beings. The story concludes with a meeting between the artist and Yanagita, where they discuss their work.
