Un groupe de guerriers appelés les Chevaliers du Zodiaque défendent la déesse Athéna. Seiya, un orphelin, est destiné à devenir le Chevalier du Pégase. Athéna a été réincarnée, mais une prophétie prévoit sa défaite par Poséidon et Hadès, entraînant la destruction de l'humanité. Seiya refuse d'accepter ce destin et s'engage à la protéger. Après qu'une flèche tueuse de dieux transperce son cœur, Seiya doit atteindre le Sanctuaire et surmonter douze Chevaliers d'Or en douze heures pour la sauver. L'issue de la prophétie reste incertaine s'il réussit.
