In 1863, amid Japan's political turmoil marked by violence and conflict, the Tokugawa Shogunate deploys the Roshigumi, a group of masterless samurai, to support the Aizu forces in Kyoto. The Roshigumi is divided into two factions following an assassination, with one led by the ruthless Serizawa Kamo and the other by the principled but hesitant Isami Kondo. Ryunosuke Ibuki is drawn into the group by Serizawa, bound by a debt that forces him into servitude. Initially despising the samurai and their values, he gradually begins to see a different side of them. This shift in perspective leads him to hope for a better future, both for himself and for Japan, if Kondo can act decisively against Serizawa.
