Ep. 21: Teito and Hakuren choose the door of the defeated after a final exam challenge.
The military seeks Teito, the master of the Eye of Mikhail, who has lost his Zaiphon energy. A friend restores his strength before the exam begins. In the first hall, Teito overcomes fear-induced paralysis to lead the way. The next phase involves surviving while answering questions using Zaiphon. Midway through, Teito assists elderly candidates crossing a rope bridge. The final trial requires one candidate to pass through the door of the Victor and the other through the door of the Defeated. After a fight, Teito and his companion both choose the door of the Defeated, writing "Damn You!" instead of their names. Bishop Lance reveals this selfless act allows them to pass. When asked for their reasoning, Hakuren states no one won or lost, while Teito simply wishes to remain with his friend.
