Ep. 23: Trainees confront physical fears while Teito faces Ayanami and Hakuren confronts his father.

The second exam forces remaining trainees to face physical manifestations of their deepest fears, with failure resulting in falling through the bridge. Teito encounters Ayanami and witnesses visions of the pain he caused Mikage and his family, leading to self-blame that paralyzes him during an attack. Simultaneously, Hakuren finds his father with a mysterious figure in a black cape who urges him to end his father's life. Hakuren eventually saves and forgives his father, while Teito remains in shock, prompting examiners to ask Bishop Lance to terminate the exam. Teito realizes his true enemy is his own guilt over Mikage's death. As the last trainees overcome their fears, the imperial army invades the church. Teito attempts to exit but finds himself in a dark underground corridor where the real Ayanami appears before him.
