Ep. 9: Human rebels lure intelligent machines into a matrix to teach empathy and aid Zion's resistance.

Above-ground rebels capture two intelligent runners to implant them in a custom matrix, hoping to instill compassion and empathy. Their goal is to create enlightened machines to help Zion fight machine-controlled totalitarianism. Alexa watches the runners approach and leads them to the lab, where a reprogrammed robot dies, but the second runner kills it before Alexa electrocutes it. Inside the matrix, the runner experiences wonder and suspects an emotional bond with Alexa. Sentinel reinforcements attack, forcing rebels and captured machines to unplug and defend the headquarters. Alexa unplugs the now-good runner, who saves her from a machine. All rebels and attackers are destroyed except the runner. He plugs the dying Alexa and himself into the matrix. Alexa realizes she is trapped, screaming as her avatar dissolves. The runner exits to find Alexa dead in the real world, then stands outside looking at the sea.
