Black Jack treats Sono, a young girl with light sensitivity and a weak heart, whose father forces her to master ikebana to lead the family. Pushed to the brink of death for a recital, Sono nearly dies attempting to view wildflowers. Black Jack confronts her father about the excessive pressure. When Sono questions the value of surgery, believing she will die regardless, Black Jack explains that life’s beauty lies in living, citing his own difficult patients. He states the operation is cancelled if she lacks the will to live. Ultimately, Sono expresses her desire to survive, prompting Black Jack to perform the surgery to extend her life.
