Renji confronts Szayel Aporro regarding the negation of his bankai. Szayel explains that he collected the necessary data using parasites hidden within his older brother Ilfort Grantz, whom Renji previously defeated. Because Szayel possesses this information, Renji's shikai attacks prove ineffective against him. In a separate encounter, Ulquiorra informs Ichigo of Rukia's death. When Ichigo tries to depart to save her, Ulquiorra incites a fight by admitting he forced Orihime to come to Hueco Mundo. Enraged by this revelation, Ichigo activates his bankai and dons his hollow mask, preparing to engage Ulquiorra in combat.
