Since a pillar of light appeared, Hijiridani High School student Jounouchi Hisashi has witnessed spider-like bugs attached to people's hearts. He removes these bugs to free individuals from their pain by erasing their memories, but he develops an addiction to consuming the creatures. His unusual conduct draws the attention of a policeman who begins to track his movements. Eventually, Jounouchi meets the Boogiepop Phantom, who leads him to a place of light where he discovers happiness. This sequence of events highlights his struggle with the bugs and the consequences of his actions on those around him.
