Jan 6, 2000Moto Tonomura, a shy student with obsessive-compulsive habits, harbors an unexpressed crush on Saotome Masami. After Saotome disappears, she encounters his ghost-like apparition in an alley a month later. She follows the figure and confesses her love. When the apparition states a desire to eat her, she agrees. Suddenly, a figure wearing a black stovepipe hat appears and kills the fake Saotome, ending the encounter abruptly.
EP 2Jounouchi Hisashi sees heart bugs and eats them while being followed by a policeman
Jan 13, 2000Since a pillar of light appeared, Hijiridani High School student Jounouchi Hisashi has witnessed spider-like bugs attached to people's hearts. He removes these bugs to free individuals from their pain by erasing their memories, but he develops an addiction to consuming the creatures. His unusual conduct draws the attention of a policeman who begins to track his movements. Eventually, Jounouchi meets the Boogiepop Phantom, who leads him to a place of light where he discovers happiness. This sequence of events highlights his struggle with the bugs and the consequences of his actions on those around him.

Jan 20, 2000At Hijiridani High School, Misuzu Arito adopts the nickname Panuru, honoring a friend killed by a serial killer. While pretending to accept fate, she secretly rejects Panuru’s worldview. After friend Yoko Sasaoka discusses Jounouchi’s disappearance, Misuzu introduces her to shinigami Masami Saotome, who kills Yoko while promising to relieve her sadness. Nagi Kirima confronts Misuzu about these actions but is ignored, prompting the shinigami to set a trap. Boogiepop appears first, confronting Misuzu about her duplicity and leaving her distraught. She runs for help but encounters a policeman who slaughters her and takes her body just as Kirima arrives.

The drug, designed to enslave its users, causes him to become addicted. As the boundary between fiction and reality blurs, he descends into confusion and insanity. His subsequent arrest in the street is observed by Misuzu and Yoko.

Additionally, 70 year old Miyo Kisaragi is discovered dead in her home, which is overgrown with vegetation. Morita reveals that the Towa Organization created a composite human named Snake Eye to hunt evolved humans. He admits to being the killer but repeatedly wipes Yamamoto's memory whenever he confesses the truth.

Manaka Kisaragi appears to Mamoru alongside his childhood self, Poom Poom, prompting Mamoru to target his father's failed project, the Paisley amusement park. Morita tracks Manaka to Paisley Park and attempts to possess Mamoru. However, Sayoko intervenes and destroys Morita, revealing that she possesses the power to fulfill wishes.
EP 8Nagi Kirima Pursues the Manticore While Encountering Ichiro Kishida and Boogiepop Phantom
Feb 24, 2000Nagi Kirima mistakes Ichiro Kishida for her first love, Shinpei Kuroda, as he follows her during her hunt for the Manticore, a flesh-eating shape-shifter. They encounter Echoes, who resembles Boogiepop Phantom, before facing the Manticore disguised as Saotome Masami. Nagi attacks the creature, but Boogiepop Phantom intervenes and nearly destroys it. Boogiepop then reveals his responsibility for recent disappearances, claiming these actions are necessary for the greater good.
EP 9Saki Yoshizawa loses hope after piano teacher criticism, joins Poom Poom at Paisley Park, and dies by suicide.
Mar 2, 2000Saki Yoshizawa, a piano student aiming for music university, has her confidence destroyed by a private teacher, leading her to despair. She receives a mysterious call inviting her to play, visits Paisley Park, and accepts a red balloon from Poom Poom before joining a group of happy children. Upon returning home and facing the reality of playing piano again, she takes her own life. Yoshiki, another dissatisfied student, receives the same call and accepts a red balloon, subsequently contacting others. Boogiepop Phantom intervenes to stop Yoshiki from making further calls, ultimately removing him from the situation.
EP 10Nagi investigates red balloons at Paisely Park while Boogiepop intervenes
Mar 9, 2000Nagi travels to Paisely Park to investigate the growing acceptance of red balloons. There, she encounters childhood versions of the recipients who attack her. A feminine Boogiepop appears, causing Manaka to fall from a Ferris Wheel. The park lights go out, and Manaka appears to have aged significantly due to overusing her powers. As Manaka falls, the phantom children vanish and Poom Poom disappears in a flash of light. Manaka is left alone with Boogiepop after the incident concludes.
EP 11Manaka's tragic life and transformation into Echoes is revealed before her final release.
Mar 16, 2000Manaka’s history is disclosed, beginning with her birth after her father abandoned them and her mother forgot the event. Raised by a grandmother who labeled her the devil's child, Manaka lived in isolation, observing the world through unique light butterflies. At age five, her grandmother killed her before dying of old age. A pillar of light resurrected Manaka, granting her rapid maturation and superior intellect. However, she was stripped of her cognitive abilities, forced to repeat phrases, and became known as Echoes. Boogiepop intended to eliminate her, but the Boogiepop Phantom intervened, deeming her harmless. As Manaka passed away, she transformed into light butterflies, visited her hospitalized mother, and vanished within a light pillar.
EP 12A Requiem
Mar 23, 2000One year after the distorted rainbow vanished, office lady murders persist in the city. Kazuko Suema and Touka Miyashita travel to Tokyo for university entrance exams, but Touka disappears during the test. Private detective Ichiro Kishida lures an office lady to his apartment to kill her, but Boogiepop intervenes. Boogiepop reveals he is the deceased Shinpei Kuroda, a former Towa Organization agent who assumed Kishida’s identity and is possessed by Manaka’s preserved Manticore. Kuroda traps the entity within his body, then destroys both himself and the Manticore using an electromagnetic bomb. Later, Kazuko, Touka, and Nagi reunite at their school graduation before parting ways.
