Following a successful operation, Candy observes that men mistakenly believe accidents are fatal and doctors receive superior care compared to nurses. She also realizes that Dr. Kerry is the sister of Arthur Kerry, the wanted man she previously transported by train. Arthur became a fugitive after accidentally killing a thieving administrator who had fired him from a pet shop. Dr. Kerry learns of Arthur’s location in Chicago through Dr. Martin, Archibald, and Annie, who connect clues from Candy’s letter about Graytown. Dr. Kerry takes a week off to find him, leaving Candy alone. Nelson, frustrated by the clinic’s slow progress due to frequent minor patient visits, demands Candy leave. When she refuses, he imprisons her in a tunnel.
