Mrs. Pony convinces Candy to travel to Graytown for nursing work, prompting Candy to depart despite her companions' hopes to stop her. She discovers Klint, her former nursing school peer, hiding as a stowaway, leading to their reunion after a long separation. As the group dwindles, only Candy and a masked criminal remain in the final wagon. The stationmaster ignores the criminal's past and urges Candy to return to Chicago, but she insists on continuing to the construction site. During a stone avalanche caused by blasting, the criminal protects Candy, revealing his true identity as Dr. Kerry. When a worker is injured and the local doctor has fled, the negligent foreman Nelson demands surgery. Dr. Kerry steps in to perform the operation with Candy assisting, proving his worth despite his criminal reputation.
