Klint assists Candy in escaping a tunnel, where a masked man intervenes to protect her. Candy identifies him as Arthur after noticing his false beard and promises to keep his identity secret. She informs him that his sister returns from Chicago soon and notifies Archibald of Arthur’s presence in Graytown. Meanwhile, Eliza discovers Candy’s sealed letter and copies of Archibald’s correspondence in his desk. She plans to report Candy to the police for harboring a fugitive murderer. When Nelson’s dog McKinley falls ill, Arthur uses his veterinary knowledge to cure the animal. Nelson rewards them with breakfast. On the return train to Graytown, Dr. Kerry overhears the sheriff and fears for Arthur. To reach Graytown before the law, she hikes through a storm, while the sheriff is delayed by dangerous weather conditions preventing further train travel.
