Candy’s emotions collapse into despair over losing Terry once on the train to New York. She opens the backdoor to the snowstorm and passes out with a fever. Waking at the Ardley mansion, she learns Alistear enlisted in France, explaining his awkward farewell and music box gift. Great-aunt Elroy blames Candy for Anthony’s death, William’s disappearance, and Alistear’s departure, exiling her from the Ardley name in Chicago. Archibald, Annie, and Patricia return her to her apartment, where Albert catches her when she faints. Candy confesses her breakup with Terry to Albert, who offers comfort. Albert later goes grocery shopping but is involved in a hit-and-run accident.
