A train halts for Tom's cows, allowing Candy to recognize him. Tom warns her against visiting Graytown, citing criminal activity and claiming Mrs. Pony is gravely ill. He gives Candy a horse to ride to Pony's Home instead. At the hill, Candy finds a cross marking Mrs. Pony's grave. Sister Mary reveals the truth: Mrs. Pony is healthy, and Tom lied to divert Candy. The cross was made by Bob, who takes pride in carpentry and writing. Bob creates crosses for people who anger him. Candy asks Bob to make a signboard for the Graytown clinic. Despite this, Mrs. Pony and Sister Mary also hope to dissuade Candy from traveling to Graytown, as the location is dangerous.
