Dr. Leonard keeps Albert in a poor room at St Joanna Hospital because his identity is unknown. He lost his memory after a train bomb in Italy, where he protected Poope and a spy was present. He repeatedly mentions America and Chicago, leading to his admission. Candy defends him against spy accusations but feels helpless without his family details. The Cornwell brothers and Annie distract her with Patricia, whose comments on London trigger Candy to explain Albert’s situation. Although they wish to help, they can do little. When Candy returns to improve Albert’s comfort, he is awake but does not recognize her, Poope, or even his own name.
