Candy returns to St. Joanna's to plead with Dr. Leonard, who cites war nurse Catherine in his refusal. She secures a cleaning job instead, prompting nurses to defend her and reveal Catherine died in battle. Exempted from night watches while caring for Albert, Candy finds him absent and intervenes to stop thugs from attacking Neil. Neil initially resists but later acknowledges her sincere intent. Returning home empty-handed, she finds Albert has secured work and intends to buy her a gown for her Broadway visit to Terry. Meanwhile, Susanna interrupts Terry’s rehearsal, overwhelmed by thoughts of Candy. After he dismisses her, she breaks down, cursing Candy and declaring her love for Terry.
