Ganta learns from inmate Yoh Takami that cast points are required for decent meals and to purchase "candy," the antidote for a poison secretly stolen from his bag. He and Shiro decide to enter a high-stakes dog race to win the prize money needed for survival. In the locker room, they face intimidation from inmate Kazumasa Kouzuji, who is silenced by Warden Makina. The race course is filled with lethal traps, but Ganta and Shiro advance to the final stage against Kazumasa. There, they must hold onto a ball while avoiding a spike pit. Ganta confronts Kazumasa, causing him to fall to his death. In the final moments, Ganta sacrifices the ball and the prize money to prevent Shiro from falling, honoring their promise to share the runner-up prize.
