Gohan and Krillin save Piccolo from Frieza, prompting the tyrant to charge a Death Ball to destroy the planet. Goku launches a Spirit Bomb that absorbs the attack, forcing Frieza into the ocean. After the Z Fighters celebrate, Frieza returns, severely injured but still dangerous. He kills Krillin and shoots Piccolo with a Death Beam, knocking him unconscious. Witnessing these sacrifices, Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan, with his hair turning blonde and eyes green. Empowered by this change, he instructs Gohan to take Piccolo to the spaceship and flee to find Bulma, while Goku remains to confront Frieza alone.
