The Iwatobi High School Swim Club has struggled to attract new members a year after its founding, putting its future at risk as Haruka Nanase and Makoto Tachibana prepare for graduation. Along with Nagisa Hazuki and Rei Ryuugazaki, they must find ways to increase membership before the club is shut down. At the same time, Haruka and Makoto remain uncertain about their post-graduation plans, unlike Rin Matsuoka, who leads the Samezuka Academy Swim Club with the goal of becoming a professional swimmer. Tensions arise when Sousuke Yamazaki, a former friend of Rin's, arrives in the city to attend Samezuka Academy and is scouted as a swimmer, affecting the dynamics between Rin, Haruka, and himself.
