During the Star Festival, Nuriko, Tasuki, and Miaka enjoy the festivities. Miaka is suddenly reminded of Amiboshi's death and flees to the river to honor him. Tamahome locates her there and insists they speak. Miaka reveals that Taiitsukun instructed her to give up her love for Tamahome. Although upset, Tamahome departs, stating that once they successfully call Suzaku, he will make Miaka a happy bride. The episode concludes with Tamahome returning home to discover his family dead.
