The Imperial fleet accepts Bucock's challenge, sending most ships to the Mar-Adetta system, which features unstable solar activity, communication jamming, and an asteroid belt corridor. Bucock's fleet hides within this corridor. As the Imperial forces advance, they encounter unstable asteroids, artillery fire, and space mines. The Alliance fleet attacks from unexpected positions inside and behind the belt. On January 16th, 800 S.C. / 2 N.I.C., the Imperial fleet finds itself engaged in a unexpectedly difficult battle.
