Reuenthal intends to surround incoming forces with a specific fleet formation, but Mittermeyer arrives early and launches a swift assault before the plan is fully established. Utilizing rapid maneuvering, Mittermeyer extends the engagement to minimize losses. Bittenfeld and Wahlen eventually join the fray; Wahlen suffers severe injuries, losing his artificial arm, while Bittenfeld commands an unstable coalition of half his remaining crew and remnants of Fahrenheit's fleet. Admiral Knapfstein falls during the combat. The conflict devolves into a war of attrition. Upon receiving reports that Mecklinger is approaching the Rantemario system, Reuenthal orders an immediate and hurried withdrawal from the battlefield.
