Mittermeyer attempts to persuade Reinhard to show restraint. Reuenthal sends a letter warning of Lang’s danger but ignores Reinhard, assuming he is controlled by Lang and Oberstein, which enrages Reinhard. Mittermeyer realizes refusing the Emperor would have caused unrest among Reinhard’s vassals. He considers killing Lang, but Kesler intervenes. A report by Lutz and Kesler implicates Lang in the unjust imprisonment and murder of Nikolas Boltik. Hildegard discovers she is pregnant. On November 14th, Space Calendar 800, New Imperial Year 2, a fleet of 42,770 ships commanded by Mittermeyer, Wahlen, and Bittenfeld launches toward Reunthal's territory.
