The Hässliche Entlein escapes an Alliance patrol by destroying their squadron using a captured directional Seffle particle generator prototype. Because the device is digitally locked on Count Herxheimer's ship, the crew cannot access its directionality program or physically transport it. While the Hässliche Entlein returns to the Iserlohn Corridor via an alternate route to avoid detection, Siegfried Kircheis suggests to Reinhard von Müsel that they strike a deal with Margareta von Herxheimer. She is the Count's ten year old daughter, the sole survivor of her family, and the only living person who possesses the access code required to unlock the prototype.
