Margareta von Herxheimer agrees to Siegfried Kircheis’s terms, trading the directional Seffle particle generator prototype access code for her family’s safe defection to the Free Planets Alliance. Imperial Military Intelligence officer Lieutenant Commander Bendling verifies the data alongside Reinhard von Müsel and Kircheis. Upon discovering disturbing details regarding Count Herxheimer’s defection, Bendling abandons his post to protect Margareta, a decision Reinhard approves. The group departs in the Hässliche Entlein. Days later, the ship nears the Iserlohn Corridor with low supplies. Reinhard gambles on the imperfect prototype, using its directional capabilities to saturate and ignite the waiting Alliance blockade. The tactic succeeds, allowing the Hässliche Entlein to enter the corridor unscathed.
