Michael von Keyserling declines to testify against Christoph von Basel, the thyoxin trafficking leader, despite Siegfried Kircheis knowing his role. Kircheis visits Johanna von Basel, who admits she was the informant who alerted police in Kreuznach III but refuses to testify, hoping for an apology that Basel instead met with an assassination attempt. Superintendent Hoffmann urges direct confrontation, leading Kircheis to trick Basel into admitting guilt. Before arrest, Basel calls his wife to burn incriminating documents. Johanna complies out of love, causing Kircheis to hesitate. Keyserling suddenly appears and shoots Johanna, ending the struggle. The next day, with the case closed, Kircheis reunites with Reinhard von Müsel at the Krueznach III spaceport to continue their vacation.
