Following a meeting with Superintendent Hoffmann, Siegfried Kircheis accepts an invitation from Michael von Keyserling to a thank-you dinner. During the meal, Keyserling mentions plans to meet old friends arriving the next day. Later, Hoffmann reveals the attacker was a former subordinate, suggesting a suspicious connection despite Keyserling likely not remembering him. That night, Kircheis is nearly suffocated by dry ice in his hotel room. Hoffmann arrives quickly and suspects Keyserling, but Kircheis remains unconvinced. Hoffmann informs him that Keyserling's friends have already arrived in Kreuznach III. The next morning, during breakfast, Keyserling appears unaware of both the assassination attempt and the early arrival of his guests, deepening the mystery surrounding his true intentions and knowledge.
