Devastated by Nina's death and disgusted by Tucker's research, Ed considers deserting to find her killer. Al discovers references to the philosopher's stone in Tucker's papers, surprising Ed who doubts its existence. Meanwhile, Winry is kidnapped in Central by Barry the Chopper, a serial killer disguised as a woman. Ed is captured while trying to rescue her, and his automail arm is stolen. In a desperate fight, Ed nearly kills Barry before Al intervenes and authorities make the arrest. Ed breaks down emotionally but agrees to search for the stone with Al. Mustang permits the search on the condition he is informed of progress. Führer King Bradley officially titles Ed the Fullmetal Alchemist.
