Mustang directs the Elrics to board a departing train, which is subsequently hijacked by terrorists under Bald’s command. The group captures General Hakuro and his family, demanding the release of their imprisoned leader. The Elrics resist the takeover and are aided by Major Maes Hughes in defeating Bald and saving Hakuro. Upon arrival, military forces move to arrest the captives. Although Bald initially escapes, Mustang uses his Flame Alchemist abilities to restrain him. Following the incident, Mustang reveals that Hakuro has granted Ed special permission to take the state alchemist exam. Ed is surprised and annoyed by this news, suspecting that Mustang manipulated the situation to secure the opportunity for him.
