Edward and Alphonse Elric stay with Shou Tucker, the Sewing-Life Alchemist, bonding with his daughter Nina and dog Alexander. Hughes and Gracia host Ed’s birthday party, where Gracia gives birth to Elicia, allowing Ed to discover he can perform alchemy without a transmutation circle. Following the written exam, Mustang compels Al to withdraw because his lack of a physical body would raise dangerous suspicions among superiors. Ed passes the interview and the practical test by using his quick thinking, courage, and unique ability to transmute without a circle to save the entire group of prospective state alchemists.
