Ep. 2: Edward and Alphonse's tragic backstory and Edward's rise to Fullmetal Alchemist status
Edward and Alphonse travel to Liore while recalling their past. After their mother died, they tried to resurrect her using forbidden human transmutation learned from their father. This act caused Truth to take Alphonse’s body and Edward’s left leg. Edward then bound his brother’s soul to armor, sacrificing his right arm. In the present, Colonel Maes Hughes shows Mustang documents about the McDougal incident involving Xingese alkahestry. Flashbacks reveal that Edward’s survival and soul-binding skills caught Mustang’s attention. Mustang encouraged Edward to become a state alchemist. Edward passed the exam and earned the title of Fullmetal Alchemist. These events connect their personal tragedy to their official roles within the military structure.
