Togame and Shichika encounter Kiguchi Zanki, the owner of a dojo and wielder of the ninth sword, Outou Nokogiri. After Shichika loses their initial duel, Zanki agrees to teach him kendo, though Shichika’s inherited inability to wield swords results in clumsiness and accidental intimate situations that make Togame jealous. Concurrently, Princess Hitei’s servant Souda Emonzaemon assassinates Maniwa Umigame, a member of the Maniwa Ninja Corps. Shichika and Zanki duel again, with Shichika remaining unskilled. Togame employs a new strategy, distracting Zanki with shogi moves during the fight, which allows Shichika to secure victory in the match.
