During a test session, Speed is overtaken by a mysterious car numbered X3. The Three Roses Club recognizes the engine hum as belonging to a vehicle driven by a racer they killed years earlier in a mountain race. The driver is revealed to be a robot repeating the prerecorded warning, "Melange still races." This setup is the work of Flash Marker, the son of the deceased racer. Flash has vowed to destroy the Three Roses Club at the same mountain course where his father was killed, using the robot to deliver his message and initiate his revenge against the gang responsible for his father's death.
