At a station, Yuriko reunites with Shinsuke Funase, who carries a hawk. Shinsuke’s parents inform Keaton about a suicide note and an empty cage. Yuriko and Shinsuke travel to Musashi Province, where Shinsuke hopes to free the bird. Keaton learns Shinsuke previously injured his father while trying to release the hawk. Shinsuke worries about his failing grades and inability to become a doctor. The pair steal tomatoes deep in the mountains. Keaton and the father follow their trail. The father realizes Shinsuke identifies with the trapped hawk. Keaton believes Shinsuke will find his place. At a waterfall, the hawk refuses to fly. Keaton suggests it needs time. The father agrees to teach the bird survival skills.
