Ten years ago in White Wells, Daniel interviews site supervisor Davis regarding the death of assistant professor Stuart Atkins, who fell into a lake. Keaton, working part-time, discovered a Celtic brooch and clothing linked to Atkins. Daniel finds a wine flagon chip in Atkins's pocket, suggesting foul play. Davis admits to a wage dispute with Atkins and drinking with him afterward. Keaton notes the chip retains a fresh wine scent. They later find a second chip in Professor Powell's office. Powell confesses to striking Atkins with the flagon after Atkins choked him, as Atkins was jealous of Powell's engagement to Stevens's daughter Dolly. Keaton arrests Powell before he can shoot. Daniel then proposes a business partnership to Keaton.
