The Junior Detective Boys find a bloody corpse while searching for a cat, but it disappears despite Conan's observation. Police arrive and meet Tanaka Kazuyoshi, who appears asleep, and his brother Tomofumi, leading Inspector Megure to dismiss the incident as a prank. Conan later returns to find Kazuyoshi actually dead, positioned to look like he fell asleep. Tomofumi confesses to killing his brother after Kazuyoshi blackmailed him for illegal stock trading. Tomofumi disguised himself as Kazuyoshi and used an answering machine to mimic his voice, fooling the police. During a psychotic break, Tomofumi attempts to kill Conan, but his confession is broadcast to Inspector Megure via a badge. Tomofumi is defeated by an iron kettle, restoring the Inspector's faith in the children.
