Antique collector Maru Denjiro hires Kogoro to investigate his wife Ineko while meeting clients. His body is found pinned to a wall with a katana. Clues implicate clients Suwa Yuji and Akutsu Makoto, plus Dr. Hatano Ikuya, who is Ineko's lover. Conan notices mismatched scratches on dresser drawers and rearranges them to reveal a hidden message. The drawers spell out Suwa in hiragana, identifying Suwa Yuji as the killer. Yuji confesses that Denjiro sold a sword Yuji had used as loan collateral. Yuji attacks the unconscious Kogoro but stops. He is arrested, and Kogoro panics upon seeing his own blood.
