Ran and Sonoko encounter Chie Yoshino, who nearly misses them after allegedly falling asleep in her vehicle. Ran meets Chie’s husband, Akio, and finds his behavior suspicious. The following day, Ran, Conan, and Sonoko visit the Yoshino home, where Ran learns Chie holds a high insurance policy and intends to buy Akio an expensive sports car. Suspecting Akio plans to murder Chie in a staged accident, Ran investigates despite Kogoro’s orders to stop. Conan inspects the house for sick building syndrome and discovers Akio tampered with the car. When Akio attempts to spray poison into the ventilation system, Conan and Ran catch him in the act. Akio confesses that company pressure and his desire for a car motivated the crime. He is arrested, and Chie subsequently divorces him and reverts to her maiden name.
