Conan observes businessman Norihisa Kisugi making a suspicious call to private detective Katsunori Chuujou, who demands quadruple payment for investigation documents regarding an unknown individual. Kisugi agrees and is subsequently killed by the individual during a blackout. He is found dead on an escalator with an envelope marked ○×△. Police interpret this as a dying message and trace the call to Kisugi, who reveals he hired Chuujou to find a company embezzler. The embezzler's identity is missing from Chuujou's envelope, narrowing the suspect list to thirty-one from fifty-eight. Conan identifies a blood trail and uses luminol to reveal a square symbol, completing the message as □○×△, noting the square is significantly larger than the other symbols.
