Kisaki defends a burglar accused of murder rather than manslaughter after he knocked out a company proprietor with an ashtray. The proprietor was found dead by his son-in-law and a superintendent, who saw the struggle through a door eyehole. While the suspect admits to the assault and attempted burglary, he denies stealing the missing cash. Kisaki discovers the prosecution seeks a murder charge because the victim previously cheated the suspect’s daughter. Ran convinces Kogoro to investigate, assisting Kisaki in proving the suspect’s innocence regarding the death.
