After the owner is hospitalized, Kogoro begins flawed deductions while the children investigate the crime scene. They determine the perpetrator is local or a tourist. Conan identifies a lacquer tree that caused the owner to faint. The group learns Nagakura supported World Heritage status, while inspector Kawaji accepted bribes and is arrested. The children discover the swapped locations of the Nagakura and Otozawa houses. In the attic of the abandoned home, they find stolen jewels. That night, they wait for the culprit. Sakaki, a missing jewel appraiser, is revealed as the criminal. He forced a indebted Eiji to assist in the robbery, then killed the guard and Eiji to conceal his crimes.
